So knowing the actual status of this switch was not important, so I simply set the auto-poll on the device to once every 10 minutes. One of these switched controlled outside lights that I had schedules to change on/off twice a day.

In my very specific use case, I had cheap old-gen Z-wave wall switches that did not automatically report status when activated locally. Every use case is different, what is it that you're hoping to solve/accomplish/rectify/etc by polling a z-wave device? If you want to poll ocasionally to ensure accurate status in case of a missed communication, should you turn on polling with a low poll frequncy (like every 4 hours) or would it be better to poll manually from an event when you want to confirm that the status is up to date?I think you answered your own question.
